One of our favourite women’s clothing brands of the moment – Spell & the Gypsy Collective

Amassing almost 1 million followers on Instagram, Spell & the Gypsy Collective has grown from a local Byron Bay brand to an international cult favourite on social media, known for its festival and resort bohemian-inspired clothing. The two sisters Isabella and Elizabeth Briedis started off selling jewellery at the local markets about a decade ago, and since then the brand has evolved into a complete lifestyle brand for the boho-inspired style, with spinoffs into bridal wear and children’s clothes, and is stocked at the top US e-commerce site likes Free People, Shopbop and Revolve. We take a deeper look into why we’re so obsessed with this brand lately:

1) Their beautiful boho & resort clothing

Spell & the Gypsy Collective is  known as a staple at music festivals like Coachella, Splendour in the Grass, Byron Bay Bluesfest and so on, but is also worn by lifestyle bloggers while travelling to Mexico, Maldives or other exotic beach resorts. Their boho-inspired look is comfortable, easy to wear, and works for any type of body with it’s loose, flowy styles, and anyone with a carefree spirit. The attention to detail in the embroidery work, printing and fabrics that goes into the making of the clothing is meticulous, and the brand’s clothes have lasted, such that they’ve become vintage pieces themselves!

2) Their Instagram feed

One of the sisters, Elizabeth had a background in video editing, and when the sisters started their brand in the early days, they leveraged this by posting photoshoots on their blog to promote it online, attracting the following of early (and now very famous) Australian bloggers like Oracle Fox and Tuula Vintage.  Their Insta visual aesthetic is very strong with lots of pinks, neutrals & earthy tones, which ties in with the overall romantic boho-inspired theme.

3) Their retail concept store in Byron Bay

Just as Insta-worthy as their IG feed, the Spell store in Byron Bay has become a must-visit attraction in Byron Bay, and because of Spell’s success, the Byron Bay area has seen several other boho clothing brands being launched there as well.

4) Bloggers/influencers that they work with

Early adopters of the Spell brand included bloggers like Oracle Fox and Tuula Vintage. Now they work with major travel & lifestyle bloggers like @sincerelyjules & @gypsea_lust to stay on top of their ‘Gram game.

5) Their brand commitment to sustainable & ethically produced fashion

Committed to producing sustainable and ethical fashion, the brand has been transparent about where they make their clothing and has even gone ahead to sign up as one of the 64 companies on the Circular Fashion Commitment on closing the loop towards recycling, resuse and repair of clothing.
